“I feel blessed to become a part of such a hospitable community,” Steffes said. “I truly believe in the vision of the organization’s leadership and I look forward to becoming invested in the community. On the ice, I consider myself  a defensive, two-way player who can play a hard, power forward style of game.”

Steffes, 26, enters his fourth professional season after playing three seasons with the Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League (AHL) and the Tulsa Oilers of the Central Hockey League (CHL). Playing 169 games for Tulsa, the Grand Blanc, Michigan native scored 61 goals and added 68 assists for 129 points. In 2010-11, he was named to the CHL’s All-Rookie Team with 43 points (19g-24a) in 66 games and followed that up with back-to-back 20+ goal seasons in 2011-12 and 2012-13.

Last season, after posting 34 points (20g-14a) in 37 games with Tulsa, Steffes earned his first call-up to the AHL with Lake Erie. In 16 games with the Monsters, the 6’2, 211 lbs. center had one goal and two assists for three points.

A 2012-13 nominee for the CHL’s Man of the Year Award, Steffes gives his time and talents to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). He works specifically with FCA Hockey, a group that travels the world sharing the gospel through hockey camps and clinics and recently traveled to Turkey, where he assisted in growing the game of hockey by building a foundation for a youth hockey program.
What Troy says:

“Gary is a big right shot centermen, who brings that dynamic of being strong on faceoffs and with puck possession being so critical, that is key. I saw him with Lake Erie last season and I think he’s going to be a solid player at this level. He is one of the best character guys that has checked out and character leads to championships.”
