Late Surge Not Enough as Condors Fall 4-3 to Alaska

ANCHORAGE, AK – The Bakersfield Condors (14-34-4-1, 33pts), scored twice in the final minute of regulation with the goaltender pulled, but could not overcome the Alaska Aces (35-14-2-4, 76pts) and fell, 4-3, on Sunday night at Sullivan Arena.

A tightly played first period led to few scoring opportunities for either side. However, the Aces received a late power play and cashed in when D Kane Lafranchise’s shot snuck through the glove hand of Condors G Matt Keetley at the 18:25 mark to give Alaska a 1-0 lead. The Condors were outshot, 9-7.

Alaska extended the lead to 2-0 in the second period at the 10:10 mark when F Chris Langkow scored his second of the year. Shots were 13-4 in favor of the Aces.

The Aces scored twice in the third period with D Bryan Miller and F Nick Mazzolini scoring at 10:14 and 13:38 to stretch the lead to 4-0. Bakersfield mounted a frantic, late third period comeback, scoring three times. First, RW Tyler Helfrich potted his 12th of the season on the power play at 17:32. Then with the goalie pulled and under a minute remaining, LW Evan Trupp banged home a cross crease pass with 41 seconds remaining to make it 4-2. Just 16 seconds later, F Kyle Calder tucked in a loose rebound to pull the Condors within one at 4-3. Bakersfield would go on to get a few late chances, but could not complete the comeback and fell 4-3.
