Condors Will Send Two All-Stars to Stockton

The Bakersfield Condors will be represented at the 2008 Chase Chevrolet ECHL All-Star game in Stockton by F Todd Griffith and D Kevin Truelson. Griffith was selected to the All-Star team on Dec. 21 when the entire National Conference Team was announced, while Truelson was added to the team, and named a starter, on Jan. 8 when it was learned that Alaska Aces D Bryan Miller will not be able to play due to injury.

This is the second All-Star selection for both Griffith and Truelson. Griffith was named to his first All-Star team last season as a rookie. He finished the season with 43 points (26g-17a) in 46 games. The 22 year-old native of Welland, Ontario has 13 points (6g-7a) in 20 games this season, including a 10-game point streak in December.

Truelson was named to his first All-Star game in the 2003-04 season as a rookie blueliner for the Fresno Falcons. That year, he totaled 31 points (9g-22a) in 64 games. This season, the 26 year-old native of Weymouth, Mass. is tied for second among the league's defensemen with 7 goals and tied for seventh with 21 points. He has skated in every game this year, his third straight campaign in Condorstown.

    Derlago Honored by Brandon Sun
    derlago

Condors LW Mark Derlago was announced as the winner of the H.L. (Krug) Crawford Memorial Medal, emblematic of athletic achievement in western Manitoba, by the Brandon Sun on Jan. 2. Derlago beat out 14 finalists from a wide spectrum of sports for the award. He finished his Brandon Wheat King career last season by leading the Western Hockey League with 46 goals and notching a career-high 81 points in 72 games, and was named the Wheat Kings' Most Valuable Player. Derlago was also a finalist for the Most Sportsmanlike Player honor in the WHL last season.

In four years with the Wheat Kings, Derlago tallied 82 goals and 162 points in 209 games, even though he missed the entire 2004-05 season with a broken neck. Derlago's neck injury made his performance last season even more remarkable, and led the Brandon Sun to describe him winning the award as "the last chapter in a feel-good story of a local hockey hero."

The award is an excellent conclusion to Derlago's junior hockey career, as he continues the introduction to his professional career with the Condors. He has notched 17 points (8g-9a) in 33 games so far this season.

Blast from the Past - Female Goaltender Denies Aces
    dube

Jan. 11, 2003 was an interesting night in Condorstown. The ZOOperstars were at The Nest... The rival Anchorage Aces were in town, featuring a lineup of Dean Larson, Yvan Corbin and future Condors F Valdemar Pelikovsky... Ken Baker (at the time, the West Coast Bureau Chief of US Magazine) was the emergency backup goaltender with soon-to-be WCHL MVP Kevin St. Pierre sidelined to injury...

And Danielle Dube was set to be the starting goaltender.

Dube had spent the entire season up until that week with the Long Beach Ice Dogs, primarily as a third-string goaltender, with two professional appearances. A former member of the Canadian National Women's Team and veteran of several international tournaments, Dube became the first woman to suit up for the Condors, and was the winning goaltender in a 6-4 decision over the Aces in front of 6,548 fans at the then-Centennial Garden.

"To have your MVP goalie go down with an injury and be replaced by a female goaltender in her second professional start - I don't think a lot of people probably thought we were going to win that game," Team President Matthew Riley said. "The events surrounding that game were actually pretty unbelievable. To think in just 10 years all the special moments and memories that have taken place in Condorstown is rather amazing."

A three-goal first period staked Dube to an early lead, with goals by Paul Willett, Jason Jackman and Christian Skoryna.

Kevin McNeil's goal just 2:03 into the second made it a one-goal game again, but Shawn Byram answered for Bakersfield to make it 4-2. The clubs exchanged tallies again, with Larson bringing the Aces back within a goal, and Jason Ralph scoring for the Condors to make it 5-3 after 40 minutes.

Again the Aces pulled within striking distance of the Condors with Larson's second of the night, but Jackman scored again, on a breakaway, to account for the final margin. Dube finished the night with 16 saves on 20 shots for her first career win.
