Hello, Condorstown!
A large part of the Condors 5-2-3 record since Jan. 12, including their impressive six-game unbeaten in regulation streak (4-0-2) from Jan. 12 - Jan. 26, is due to the few new faces in Condorstown. Bakersfield brought in four new players in a span of just 11 days in early to mid January. The influx of roster changes started with the signing of G Michel Robinson. The 25 year-old Montreal, Quebec native signed with the team on Jan. 5, and geared up for his first start the very next night in Stockton. Robinson has appeared in a total of 10 games, and won four of his first six starts. He has stopped 30 or more shots seven times. The Condors followed Robinson's signing by bringing in three high-energy forwards. Jason Kostadine signed on Jan. 8 and added an immediate physical presence to the Condors front lines. Chris Di Ubaldo met the team on Jan. 15 in Victoria, and has skated in eight games since then. Tom Boudreau, who was acquired on Jan. 12 in a trade with Reading, made his Bakersfield debut on Jan. 18 and registered an assist in his first period of Condors hockey. A transaction-filled month was capped on Feb. 2 when Bakersfield added a familiar face to this year's squad in Condors Legend Quinn Fair. The 34 year-old blueliner retired after playing four years in Condorstown from 2000-04 and sits in the top three on the Condors all-time points (91), goals (24) and assists (67) lists for defensemen. He is also fifth on the Condors all-time games list with 234 games played. Fair appeared in his first pro games since 2004 last weekend in Stockton. The new additions have nicely complimented the red-hot top line of Sean Venedam, Mark Derlago and Andrew Ianiero, as the Condors continue to chase down the Phoenix RoadRunners, who sit in the final National Conference playoff spot, just three points above Bakersfield.

A
Condorstown record 92 ladies came out for Ladies Night on Monday,
Feb. 4. The Ladies Night participants were welcomed to the event
with an all-access walking tour of the locker room, inner concourse
and players' bench, including a chalk talk in the locker room from
Assistant Coach Mark Pederson and a Hockey 101 tutorial on the bench.
The ladies were taught all the finer points of the game, such as
the mechanics of mesh-rippling slap shots, by the pros themselves.
"My
friends and I had so much fun; going on the ice and learning to
hit the puck was great," said Becca Hiatt. "Also having the players
there was wonderful - especially the new guys."
After
the tour and instruction, the ladies and players headed across the
street to Tailgaters Sports Bar and Grill for dinner and a raffle
and a question-and-answer with the players. Raffle items ranged
from Condors merchandise to massages and facials, while the anonymous
questions covered hockey topics as well as the players' personal
lives.
"Ladies
night was absolutely great," Toni Taylor said. "I had such a blast
and can't wait until next year to do it all over again!"
All-in-all,
the event brought in 32 more ladies than last year, making this
year's Ladies Night the largest in Condors history!
Jersey designs have changed... alternate logos have emerged... and, on occasion, the Condor carries something other than a stick... but the Condors logo has remained more or less the same since the team's inception 10 years ago. And there's a good reason for that - why change a good thing? In the Condors first season, 1998-99, the popular hockey website www.inthecrease.com held a logo contest for every team in professional hockey. The contest culminated on Feb. 2, 1999, with the Condors logo standing alone at the top, an affirmation of an important decision that came early in the team's existence. "As a hockey team, you want to be tough and fierce," said Condors President Matthew Riley, who credited Owner Jonathan Fleisig and other early organization management with finally coming up with the Condors primary logo. "But obviously we also wanted to appeal to women and children, and that can be a fine line. "At first the name was going to be the Brontos - tying in the oil heritage and the theory that oil came from the extinction of the dinosaurs. We had a couple of concepts but they were too cartoon-like. As talk went around that we were going to change from the Fog with the new building opening, the California condor kept coming up from fans and people around town and it became obvious that was the way to go." The logo designs were narrowed down and put together by Kent Whitaker of Massive Graphics, an Oklahoma-based company. The original color scheme with burgundy and green borrowed heavily from the Quad City Mallards of the United Hockey League, who at the time were one of the top teams in the minor league sports world in terms of merchandise sales. And it all came together from there. "I remember a fan coming up to me in the convention center after one game, in which we'd lost yet again, saying the Bronto name was stupid (as apparently it had leaked out) and we were stupid. While the delivery was less than professional, it was obvious that we had some passionate fans, and we better try to get this right." Well, the Condors apparently got it right... and 10 years later it's hard to imagine a Bakersfield hockey team by any other name.
