A: Thanks for your comments Cheryl. We are definitely proud of our players! Our players recognize that when they come to Condorstown, they are making a commitment to be more than just hockey players. Obviously we want good hockey players on our team, but more importantly we want good people. In a few months, no one is going to remember who won the hockey game on November 21, but Kenny, his family and those players will probably remember that moment for the rest of their lives. That is truly what it’s all about. Go Condors! Matthew Riley, President

Condorstown, here’s your chance to find out what Bob Bartlett really does. He’s more than just a name and picture that’s displayed on the jumbotron on game nights he’s our Director of Hockey Operations. Bob Bartlett describes his job as: 1. As Director of Hockey Operations, I am responsible for working with the coaches on scouting, recruiting and the signing of players within our salary cap. We have our first meeting shortly after the season ends to decide which direction to go for the next season and what type of players we need to fit our goals and community. I also spend a lot of my time working with NHL team personnel to ensure that we have affiliated players. While there are pros and cons to an affiliation, we have set a goal of getting a formal NHL affiliation and that is part of my job. We are still working hard on this goal. 2. I travel weekly to games across Western Canada and the U.S. and spend time monthly with our team as well. This is the way we keep in touch with hockey personnel at the juniors, college and professional levels. 3. About 80 percent of the players we recruit, we have seen play personally. Other players are referred by scouts or agents that we have a good relationship with. There are also several scouting services that tap into for information on players in North America and Europe. Another good source of information are former teammates who have played with them in juniors or college. The more we know about a player, the more confident we can be that he’ll fit into our program and our community. 4. The most reliable information we have is if we have seen the player personally. For example, I have known Kevin St Jacques since he was 14. I’ve had him as a player in juniors and in the pros. So in recruiting him, there are few surprises. Reagan Leslie is another player I was able to watch and get to know through four years of junior and one University season. I had Reagan’s brother at a few training camps so we got a good amount of important on-ice and off-ice information on him. 5. When scouting most of us ask two basic questions of players we are recruiting. 1. What kind of a player is he? 2. What kind of a person is he? A combination of a good player and a good person is key to long term success in sport in my opinion. 7. I couldn't even guess the miles I have put in over the years. One of my nicknames is Mr. Mileage. If there is a player out there, I try to go see him. 8. The best things about being in my position is I stay involved in the game and meet the people of the game at all levels. The players keep me young. The job is the most rewarding when I see a whole organization succeeding and so far that's what we have going for us in Bakersfield! 9. When you are scouting and evaluating players, you are looking at individuals. You don't necessarily watch the game. A lot of times people will ask me what I thought of a game. I have to respond, “Here are the players I liked and give the reasons why,” but really the overall game was not my focus. Usually in the third period of a close game I put away my paperwork and just enjoy being a fan.
