Comments: It seems as though Edmonton is moving lots of players and assigning them to okc. What are the rules and regulations about assigning people from the whl,ahl or any other teams Edmonton controls to us?

Reply: The only real regulations have to do with roster limits – and while we have limits on how many players can be on our roster (20 active, 2 reserve spots, unlimited 21-day IR spots) and salary cap rules. The AHL does not have limits on their roster size and has no salary cap as players are by and large coming from the NHL club.

When you are discussing movement from the WHL, which is an amateur or “junior” league, to the pros, whether or not Edmonton controls that team is irrelevant. Those players are essentially free agents after they complete their junior careers, unless they have been drafted already.

That being said, the players that are going to OKC are not coming from their WHL team in Edmonton. They are coming from colleges and other junior teams. The Edmonton Oil Kings are currently in the 2nd round of the Western Hockey League playoffs and nobody is leaving their team yet to turn pro.

Hope that answers your question Scott.
